The VIX Overnight % Entry Settings let you control when your bot enters a trade based on the percentage change in the VIX from the prior day’s close to the current day’s open. This gives you a way to filter trades depending on how volatility shifts overnight before the trading day begins.
What Is Overnight VIX % Change?
Overnight % Change = (Opening VIX – Previous Close VIX) ÷ Previous Close VIX × 100
A positive value means volatility increased overnight.
A negative value means volatility decreased overnight.
This measurement captures volatility shocks that happen outside regular trading hours (such as earnings, news events, or global market moves).
How the Settings Work
Minimum %: The bot will only trade if the overnight VIX change is greater than or equal to your set percentage.
Maximum %: The bot will only trade if the overnight VIX change is less than or equal to your set percentage.
Both: You can define a range so trades only happen when overnight volatility changes fall between your chosen values.
Percentages must be entered as whole numbers. Example: 2% = 2.
Example
Gap Risk Strategy
You want to trade only when volatility jumps overnight.
Set Minimum Overnight % = 4.
If VIX opens 4% higher or more than yesterday’s close, your bot can enter.
Calm Open Strategy
Works best when markets open quietly.
Set Maximum Overnight % = 1.
If VIX opens 1% higher or less, your bot can enter.
By combining both, you can ensure trades only fire when overnight volatility is within your preferred risk zone.
Why This Matters
Filters trades based on overnight volatility shocks.
Keeps “calm market” strategies from firing after a big overnight gap.
Lets “high-volatility” strategies trigger only when risk conditions are right.
Summary
VIX Overnight % = change from yesterday’s close to today’s open.
Min % ensures trades only enter when overnight volatility jumps enough.
Max % keeps trades out if volatility spikes too high.
Helps align your strategies with pre-market volatility conditions.
